The First Family 3 Generations: from France to Quebec The spelling of family names and the origin of Joanis *Coming soon!* A glimpse into Jean Depoca's life through notarized contracts *Coming soon!*	Outline Our first ancestor in New France (Quebec) was Jean DEPOCA, baptised Jean Dopoukha in 1707 in Cambo-les-Bains, France. He was the son of Jean DEPOCA and Jeanne HILIART (or HIRIART or RILIART), from Cambo-les-Bains, near Bayonne in the Basque region of France. Today this region is in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the Aquitaine region. Jean DEPOCA (father) and Jeanne HILIART did not come to New France. The son Jean DEPOCA arrived in Québec (New France) between 1729 and 1738. On 2 June 1738 he married at Notre-Dame de Québec Marie-Louise PAQUET, daughter of Jacques PACQUET and Marie-Françoise STEVENS. Together they had at least 14 children, 8 of which died in childhood, and 3 of which we do not yet know their fate. We have marriage records for the other 3, Louis, Jean-Baptiste and Geneviève. Jean DEPOCA was a master shoemaker, and is refered to as such in documents spanning many years of his life in New France. He was also involved in the lumber industry, working the land around l'Ile Jésus (Laval).
